Frequently asked questions
An IBCLC brings together medical understanding, clinical skill, and compassionate care — supporting both the emotional and practical sides of feeding.
As an IBCLC and counsellor, I combine evidence-based knowledge with a gentle, responsive approach, helping you feel informed, confident, and truly supported on your feeding journey.
It’s a great question — these titles can sound similar, but they reflect different levels of training and scope of support.
IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) An IBCLC is the highest internationally recognised qualification in lactation support. IBCLCs complete extensive education, clinical experience, and a rigorous international exam. They can help with a wide range of feeding experiences — from sore or difficult latching, low or oversupply, tongue tie, expressing, and returning to work, to supporting premature or unwell babies. IBCLCs bring both medical understanding and emotional care, often working alongside GPs, midwives, and child health professionals to support families through every stage.
Breastfeeding Counsellor A breastfeeding counsellor, such as those trained through the Australian Breastfeeding Association, offers compassionate peer-based support. They listen with empathy and provide practical, evidence-based guidance to help parents feel more confident with everyday feeding challenges.
Lactation Consultant or Specialist (non-IBCLC) Some people use these titles after shorter training or personal experience, but not all are IBCLC certified. When you’re facing more complex feeding challenges, choosing an IBCLC ensures you receive comprehensive, evidence-based support from someone with advanced clinical training and a whole-family approach.
